Quality protein is not just essential for the young athlete and body builders it is import for the athlete of aging. Quality complete protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle mass. Even if you do not workout your body is continually breaking down and rebuilding muscle. We will lose muscle mass and strength as we age but that process can be slowed and nearly halted by proper strength training and nutrition. Over the decades loss of muscle will lead to lack of strength and loss of freedom. The good news is it is never too late to start strength training and gain muscle mass back. Good quality complete protein consumed throughout the day will help support that muscle repair, building or maintenance.
As we age our body becomes less efficient at utilizing dietary protein to build and repair muscle. This makes it even more critical that the athlete of aging consumes more high quality protein frequently throughout the day.
It is not usually a problem to get protein at lunch or supper. But breakfast and snacks can be an issue. Pancakes, waffles, cereal, toast, will not get you the protein you need. Eggs have some good protein but is not enough on their own. You can stack protein sources together at breakfast to achieve the amount of grams you need. Adding left over meat from dinner the night before, plus milk and cheese with your eggs can get you in the 30 - 50 gram range for breakfast that will work for most people. Generally, I would say you want 1 gram per pound of body weight each day. For a 190lb male that would mean 3 meals of 50+ grams of protein plus one snack of 30+ grams.

By stacking protein together you can get increase the grams and start your day of right.

30g of protein about 4 oz of chicken, beef, eggs will provide the 2.5 grams of leucine needed to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (muscle growth).
Another great way to ensure protein at breakfast is to have supper for breakfast. Everyone thinks about breakfast for supper and I am a huge fan but the reverse is also very good. Some left over hamburger, steak, chicken, or lasagna are a few great examples.

Protein Snacks.
Beef sticks, whey protein shakes, Greek yogurt with added protein and protein bars can be useful high protein snacks to help the Athlete of aging achieve their protein goals.
